Team Sabattus Trip
Lowell National Hisotrical Park
Friday April 6, 2012
Students will step back in time to experience life in a mill town during the early years of the Industrial Revolution. In addition to tours of the historical buildings, students will be engaged in a variety of workshops. Each student will be able to choose 2 workshops. Some students will become assembly line workers struggling with long hours and low pay. Others will be inventors experimenting with water turbines or creating new devices. Still others will explore the lives of immigrants who came to Lowell over the past 150 years. They will assume new identities and “unpack” the trunks/luggage of their immigrant personalities.
Check out the Lowell Link for descriptions/slideshows of the workshops:http://www.uml.edu/tsongas/Education_Programs/Field_Trips/Field_Trips.html
Early Morning Drop-Off:
We will leave MMS promptly at 6:45 a.m. Our program begins at 9:00 a.m. sharp, so we will not be able to wait for students who do not arrive at school on time. Please arrange to have your child dropped off between 6:20 and 6:30 a.m. If this is not possible, be sure to contact your child’s homeroom teacher. With advance notice, we may be able to assist with car-pooling arrangements.
Early Evening Pick-Up:
Our buses will leave Lowell at 3:00 p.m. and should return to MMS at approximately 5:00 p.m. Please make arrangements to have your child picked up at that time. Students are welcome to bring cell phones so that they can call parents as we near the Waterboro area. The school building will not be open.
Breakfast/Lunch:
It will be a long day. Your child should eat a good breakfast and will need to bring a lunch, including drink(s). The lunch bag must be clearly labeled with his/her name and school. Glass containers are not allowed in the museum lunchroom. Breakfast and/or lunches can be ordered through the school lunch program, please complete the attached slip.
Snacks:
Students should bring extra drinks/snacks for the bus. Pack a separate snack/drink bag so that it does not need to be brought into the museum. Food/drinks that are easily disposable and not messy would be appreciated.
Cost:
The total cost of the trip, per pupil, is $32.00. However, the Sabattus Halloween Dance brought in a little over $2,000 in revenues. The final cost to each student, therefore, will be $_________. We have left some money in reserve to help students who may need assistance. Please contact your child’s homeroom teacher. It is important to us that all of our students have the opportunity this team experience.
Money is due anytime ON or BEFORE March 16th.
Gift Shop: There is a small gift shop at Lowell Historical Park. Students typically have a chance for a quick visit to the shop.
Entertainment for the Bus: Our buses will be equipped with DVD players and we will be offering movies to help pass the time. In addition, students are welcome to bring books, sketch pads, or electronic devices (Nintendo DS, I-Pod etc) at parents’ discretion. We cannot assume liability for theft or loss. Also, all content must be 6th grade/school appropriate. Cell phones may only be use to contact parents.
